Yogyakarta (photo) has always been acknowledged as the cultural heart of Java. From Bandung to Yogyakarta, it takes about 9 hours. If you are in Solo, (photo) the train ride to Yogyakarta takes about one hour and it is a wonderful journey because of the spectacular view of Gunung Merapi. |

best way to explore Java is by train.
In Yogya, the Sultan’s Palace, the Kraton, is a highlight. Also visit the dance/gamelan performance. Indonesia has different styles of gamelan. Yogya's gemelan music (photo) is subtle when compared to the gamelans in Bali and Lombok.From Yogya book a morning tour to the Borobudur (photo) and Prambanan temples. Waking up at about 5am, you should be there by 6am to catch the morning sun. Being around this great buddhist monument is a tranquil experience.
